We know it's been an unsettling few weeks in the news, with anxieties running high in response to geopolitical events and energy concerns. Despite this, energy's good news story - solar - looks set to grow and thrive.
Here are six reasons to be positive about solar in 2026.
1. Increasing UK output
The UK's energy output from solar is rising. Last year, a record 6.3% of energy generation in the UK came from solar. That’s an extraordinary 30% rise in output. (Source: NESO)
2. More installations
UK installations are also increasing, with more than 250,000 new solar rooftop installations going online in 2025, an increase of 32% on the previous year. (Source: MCS)
3. Global capacity
Global solar capacity growth is exponential. Globally, newly added solar capacity increased last year by 11% against 2024, to 647 GW. (Source: Ember)
4. Affordability
Solar power is getting cheaper. The price of solar panels is consistently declining, falling by 90% worldwide in the last ten years or so. (Source: Our World in Data)
5. Millions of UK home set-ups
Millions are plugged in. Already in the UK, more than 1.6 million households have gone solar. (Source: Gov.uk)
6. Low-cost 'plug-ins'
The UK government has just announced the imminent availability of low-cost, 'plug-in' solar panels, which will expand the availability of solar benefits to more households.
